Former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar Shares motivation for establishing America University of Nigeria (AUN)


At the Saturday July 22 AUN Academy Graduation ceremony, the Former Nigerian Vice President, Atiku Abubakar GCON and Founder of AUN gave an insight into the driving force behind his contribution to the nation’s educational development.

The University whose goal is to "train the future leaders of Africa and to serve as both a stimulus and agent of economic development throughout the region" was founded in response to the need for a world-class university in sub-Saharan Africa.

During the Graduation ceremony, Atiku Abubakar, the Waziri Adamawa spoke briefly about the cradle-to-grave concept of the Institution as it relates to career development, from the lowest to the highest stratum of learning.

AUN Schools comprise of nursery and primary school, secondary school which is also known as AUN Academy formerly known as ABTI ACADEMY and the University which has both Undergraduate and Postgraduate School.

AUN also has several other auxiliary facilities around the campus. These include a modern Hotel, a University Club, an ICT Center, and a Printing Press.

The University recently opened an Agricultural Entrepreneurship School on a local farmstead near the campus.

While speaking at the Graduation ceremony, Atiku Abubakar said;

“… You can pursue your entire life/educational career in this one location (AUN Schools).  You can pursue your kindergarten education, your elementary, your junior high, your high, your college, your master’s, your PhD, and then you lecture in this community, you retire in this community . . .”,

“For those of you who also do not know also the history of this educational complex, it started 25 years ago … as a nursery, and then it went to a primary, went into a secondary school, and went into a university.”

The University is located in the city of Yola, capital of Adamawa, one of Nigeria's 36 states.
